Signs You Need an Oil Change
Keeping up-to-date with the routine maintenance your vehicle needs throughout the time you own it is crucial to ensure its longevity. And to keep your car's engine running efficiently and smoothly at its highest ability for years to come, changing the oil is essential. But how do you know it is time to change your oil?
Knowing the recommended mileage intervals is one way to be aware when it may be time, but there are also other signs to look for that indicate that the oil needs immediate changing to allow the engine to perform without any complications.
Here at Courtesy Nissan, we wanted to share with our drivers in Richardson, Garland, Addison, and Plano, the most common
If you see the oil light illuminated on your dashboard, it is a warning revealing your oil pressure is low. This warning light is symbolized by an old oil can with a drop of oil dripping out of it. You might even see your check engine light come on that may also be a warning related to the engine's oil.
You'll want to immediately check the level of your oil with the dipstick and have it serviced immediately if that indicates your oil is in fact at a low level.
When the oil is working properly, it provides lubrication between parts in the engine that in turn prevents any metal rubbing against other metal. This results in a quiet driving experience. But if the oil isn't doing its job by sufficiently lubricating that metal, then you'll start to hear louder engine noises.
As the issue gets worse, the noise may even start to sound like knocking. This is a definite sign that you need to change your oil.
The Color of the Oil
When you look at clean oil, it has an amber color to it and is even somewhat transparent. Over time, your oil will start to collect dirt from the engine and become darker.
Since this happens gradually, it is key to check your oil often. A test to see the condition of your oil based on its color is to take out the dipstick, wipe off the oil, then return it back into the oil. Then remove the dipstick for a second time and notice if you can see the dipstick through the oil. If you cannot, then it is time to have your oil changed.
An unfamiliar smell within the cabin is worth getting diagnosed straight away. And if that smell gives off a strong oil-like odor, you may have an oil leak. This also will require instant attention to get amended.
The smell could even resemble gas or exhaust fumes, which is a sign your car is also overheating.
